1. Types of Work Permits in Nigeria

Temporary Work Permit (TWP): This permit is for short-term assignments, usually less than three months. It is ideal for foreign workers on short-term consultancy, installation, or specialized technical jobs.

Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card (CERPAC): This permit is for long-term employment, typically valid for up to two years, and is renewable. It allows expatriates to work and reside in Nigeria.


2. Requirements for Temporary Work Permit (TWP)

Invitation Letter: The Nigerian company inviting the expatriate must write an invitation letter addressed to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), detailing the purpose of the visit, the role of the expatriate, and the duration of stay.

Passport Copy: A clear copy of the expatriate’s passport, valid for at least six months.
Application Form: Completed online TWP application form via the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) website.

Visa Approval Letter: The Nigerian company must apply for a visa approval letter on behalf of the expatriate, which is then sent to the Nigerian embassy/consulate in the expatriate’s home country.

Processing Time: Typically 7-10 working days.


3. Requirements for CERPAC (Long-Term Work Permit)
Expatriate Quota Approval: The Nigerian company must obtain an Expatriate Quota Approval from the Ministry of Interior, which specifies the number and positions of foreign workers the company can employ.

Employment Offer Letter: A letter of employment from the Nigerian company offering the job to the expatriate.

Completed CERPAC Form:

The form is available on the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) website. website.

Passport and Passport Photos: A valid passport with at least six months of validity and recent passport-sized photos.
Medical Certificate: A certificate showing the expatriate is medically fit to work.
Proof of Payment: Evidence of payment of the CERPAC fee (approximately $1,000).

4. Application Process for Work Permit
Step 1: Employer Application
The employer must apply to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) for an Expatriate Quota and Temporary Work Permit approval (for TWP) or CERPAC for long-term permits.

Step 2: Application Submission
Submit all required documents to the Nigerian embassy/consulate in the expatriate’s country of residence for the TWP or directly to the NIS for CERPAC.

Step 3: Processing and Approval
For TWP, once the NIS approves, a visa approval letter is issued to the Nigerian embassy/consulate in the expatriate's country, where they can obtain their TWP visa.
For CERPAC, the NIS processes the application, and if approved, the expatriate receives a CERPAC card.
